Here in the States, the Subway sandwich company is running a promotional contest with a variety of Sony prizes, including both regular and collector’s edition LittleBigPlanet 2. PlayStation.blog details – Subway Fiery Footlong Frenzy site – Subway Freshbuzz twitter page. [I've only won some Uncharted 2 DLC so far, and have gained twenty pounds.]

Spaff says there’s an LBP2 Beta coming soon. The LBP Beta was a crazy fun time (I even got to hand out a few codes), so we’re really excited.

As the reigning PAX East LBP PSP champion, I certainly agree that LBP2 PSP would be cool.

New trailer released at the Gamescom Sony Press Conference. More on that later.

Speaking of Gamescom, looking forward to the European PlayStation Blog‘s interview with Alex Evans. “We shot a short video interview which is being edited as we speak and that you can look forward to seeing either at the end of this week or the beginning of next. He gave me an insight into LittleBigPlanet 2’s story and shed details of the incredible sounding music creation, which should give a new lease of life to those LBP musicians out there.”

Speaking of Gamescom, looking forward to hearing about the imminent Media Molecule Gamescom Fan Meet 2010. We couldn’t send anyone to Germany this year, due to what is known around LiBiPl.net HQ as “the currywurst incident“, but we’ll look forward to living the good life vicariously through our more European friends.

Speaking of Gamescom, looking forward to the LittleBigPlanet team maybe taking a page from Zipper’s book and announcing a Beta strategy this week. Maybe?

Speaking of not-Gamescom, there’s a PlayStation Move event in Washington D.C. next week. In the comments on the east coast Washington event, PlayStation Social Media Superman Jeff Rubenstein revealed their intention to reveal their intentions regarding the upcoming west coast Washington event: PAX meetup details next week! We’re definitely being represented at PAX, so we’re eager to find out next week whether we’re arriving too late or leaving too early to meet the American Sony dudes.

And since one of the replies about costumes and jumping accompanying the trailer caused a lot of excitement, and has been widely repeated, it’s worth noting Spaff’s reply to the reply:

Before we get mobbed with questions, and people start abandoning bulky costumes, I’d like to say that wearing a costume has no actual impact on how high you can bounce, how you spin etc!

Most of the LiBiPl.net staff’s going to be at PAX, where we’ll be happy to play LBP2 again. And our good pal Jeff Rubenstein over at the PlayStation Blog says they’re “planning something fun“. We’re hoping for Sackboy dualshock holders for those of us on this side of the pond.

The PlayStation BetaRooms event has come and gone without much LBP2 info. Sure, there was a giant Sackboy (seen here with energy drink); but from the PlaystationLeague’s write-up, it sounds like there were simply two screens where you could play the Tower of Woop.

More info on the upcoming LittleBIGPlanet merchandise keeps popping up. We’re all keeping our eyes on the Mezco Toyz product pages, and I’ve heard tales of some already earmarking $42 for a direct pre-order of the 4-inch figures, even absent a release date. Evil Avatar points us to a $34.99 listing at Entertainment Earth, but depressingly with a September estimated release date. I find the named-and-themed Sackboys (Sky? Marvin?) interesting, and wonder if they’re a Media Molecule or Mezco innovation. ToyCyte has some great behind-the-scenes pics, and even gave away some of the zipper pulls in a naming contest (pic of Pufflekins Jigglecakes here). The toy budget is being expanded here at LiBiPl.net HQ in preparation.

Fanart: ~sadeceKAAN’s Sackboy Terminator gives us a different view of what’s inside (check out the other Sackboys too).

Machinima: LittleBIG Watchmen is the Watchmen trailer re-rendered (mostly) in LittleBIGPlanet.

Events: Media Molecule were scheduled to appear at F5 in New York City this year, but the official blog makes no mention of them. From the Twitter feed, it seems like PES replaced them. Good thing I didn’t take the drive down to NYC, but I am curious as to what happened.

That Game Design Student has posted all of the materials from his project on using LittleBIGPlanet for prototyping, which I found pretty interesting. His levels are also still published if you’d like to check them out.

Media Molecule posted a second Tips Special, this time with Danny and Mark from the MM design team showing you all about switches. Definitely welcome, as we’ve all played otherwise good levels tainted by ill-implemented switch mechanisms.

Random non-LBP bit: The first speedrunner I ever met was doing speedruns of Ultima II, in 1984. As I recall, he had it down to under four hours.

A games blog over at the Portland Mercury seemed impressed by LittleBigPlanet, and were nice enough to point out something that I think is being largely overlooked:

Unlike most world-building games, this platforming section is robust enough to functionally be its own game, much to the delight of those who don’t have any desire to slap together oversized fire-breathing cranes for their friends to play with.

The PlayStation Blog posted a booth tour from PAX; at 2:20 or so they start talking to SCEA’s Kyle Shubel, and he shows them a cool rocket car and the PAX08 Wall of Awesome.

The Escapist magazine gives a positive report of their hands-on session with LBP at PAX. They mention the now-famous Disney DLC, purely as an example, and also repeat the October 21st release date. Reassuringly, “Even so, Sony noted, they’re determined to keep LittleBigPlanet‘s unique style and presentation intact, so they won’t be replacing sackboy with other characters or introducing content that would weaken their own brand.”

Joystiq spent their hands-on time at PAX wisely, and give us a delightful time-lapse of them building their logo in LittleBigPlanet. Be sure to check out the multi-rider tank at the end. You can see a demo of that tank here.

PS3Center.net has a good gameplay vid of the ghostly Skate to Victory level, minus the actual skateboard part. Whoever’s playing is much better than I am; those ghosts always got me.

Robot Martini has an informative and matter-of-fact hands-on preview up. Kind of an analytical engineer’s view, which I strongly approve of.

Here’s a mini-preview from Blogcritics. “I cannot wait for this game to come out.”

The Daily Dairy also got a chance to play. Bowie reference FTW.

Cellphone camera videos of people playing LittleBigPlanet at PAX08 are certainly not in short supply. dliggins put a few up on photobucket. All of the remaining thermometer complainers seem to like seeing Kyle show the huge Elephant Temple filling only half of the glass. Someone even caught what appears to be the game’s intro animation, although the quality’s not the best (sudden brightness vs cellphone camera, I guess).

Leipzig

videogamer.com unsurprisingly listed LittleBigPlanet among their “Games that most floated our boats at GC 2008″, saying that “[...] for all the buzz about user-built levels and online communities, it was the sight of row upon row of enraptured Germans that reaffirmed our faith in this game.”

Our favourite GC-attending Molecule Craig Kerrison only got a brief appearance on X-Play (and it doesn’t seem to be online), but GameReactor lets him give a nice demo of the oh-so-gorgeous Dancers’ Court on GRTV. He does say that there are seven themes, each of which has three or four levels; if there are 60 or so levels included, mathematics tells us that some of these must be outside of the seven themes (or maybe they’re not considered “levels” per se). Maybe this is the Player/Creator divide?

buzz-worthy

CVG made some hearts flutter by posting part of a recent interview with Pete Smith, where he said that “[...] we will be aware of who those awesome designers are and certainly there’s the potential to get them building levels as part of the dev team.” Many fans already viewed LittleBigPlanet as a pathway into the industry, and I wouldn’t doubt that other developers will be keeping an eye out for fresh level design talent as well. As I recall, the “show ‘em what you can do” path worked out pretty well for Zoid.

Shuhei Yoshida, President of SCE Worldwide Studios, told videogaming247 that “LittleBigPlanet is going to be the biggest title for Sony in all markets this year”. Everyone seems surprised that he includes Japan in that prediction, but we’re not. We’ve been paying attention.

Speaking of Japan… ta-dah! Official Sackboy plush toys from Taito! Play-Asia has somewhat better scans, but I can’t wait for real pics. About the info page at NCS, though: Can someone with less rusty Japanese (and better eyes) help? What does it say at the bottom-right about the three television commercials? Early October teaser.. something new.. Mid October bookstore commercial.. ? Christmas commercial.. LittleBigChristmas Campaign? Forgive me, チャング先生、I have forgotten much.

misc

GNN gives us some cool info on (and screenshots of) the Chinese/English version of LittleBigPlanet. It looks to me like one of the player names came from a Japanese version, unless katakana is used in Chinese games as well?

One of our favourite webcomic artists, Scott Johnson, says he’s looking forward to LittleBigPlanet.

Over at wayofthegeek, CMorrison seeems certain that LBP will flop. A sucker for gamer pidgeonholing, (s)he says Hardcores are too hardcore, and Casuals are too cheap. We’ll see.

By now you’ve all seen the Media Molecule blog entry with the patchwork of screenshots showing off the lighting effects. If not, go look, it’s wonderful.

But let’s take a look at something (warning: large images):

First we have the name “The Sphinx” showing up on a Hi-Score screen. So we can assume that that’s a player’s name.

Then here we have, around the bottom of the bubblemeter, a picture and a number and a player name. And the number is much higher than the current player’s score.

It looks to me like Media Molecule have implemented a score-chasing system similar to that in the new Geometry Wars 2. While running through a level, will we see the next higher score among our friends, taunting us to go the extra mile to find more bubbles or earn bigger multipliers?

Our friend the Gastronomic Gamer continues to deliver, with nine videos from the Edinburgh Interactive Festival. I’ve re-ordered them here to push possible spoilers to the end.

First we have costume picking and messing about in the Pod, including an interesting view of some sort of debug menu. It looks like the demoer chooses “Fill Inventories”, which then takes a while.

Release date confirmation? The 24th of October, “apparently” everywhere. [UPDATE: Unfortunately Sam from SCE has disconfirmed this on the official boards. No release date beyond "October" exists yet.]

Quite instructional: Building a rocket-powered car. Bolted-on wheels like we’ve seen before, but then adding a rocket, and a “grab switch”, and linking them together? And is it just me, or does the builder tweak the camera angle to check his work? Also a good example of “hover mode”, and the building just hangs in mid-air while constructing the vehicle.

[Spoiler Warning One: Beyond here be mini-games that haven't been widely seen yet:]

The rocket pack helicopter-like game of keeping between the electric floor and ceiling looks fun. I love the way the terrain dissolves once you’ve moved past it (part of the time?). Also revealed: a faux-underwater level was taken out of the game for being too easy, and may be part of the first DLC.

Bull riding over poison gas, with an explanation of how some of the mini-games work: After all of the players have spawned in, the spawn point moves to above the scoreboard. So once everyone dies, they all spawn onto the scoreboard and end the level.

Fiery maze race. It appear that they ran into a “can’t complete the level” kind of bug. Take a good look, Mr. Why-don’t-they-just-release-it-now and Mrs. I-don’t-care-if-it’s-buggy-just-let-me-play.

“Spline Rider” seems oddly familiar.

[Spoiler Warning Two: Later story-mode levels (including the last one) seen below:]

First a Japanese level, complete with pretty bridges and ninjas. There’s the balloon! I love how it bumps into the clouds.

Apparently the final boss of the game, there’s a failed attempt at defeating “The Collector” after a successful attempt at getting into his lair. Great multi-stage boss action; with the big boss spawning smaller enemies. After viewing this, I’m a bit concerned about my skill being insufficient to complete the story mode.
