Just Say No to Proposition Pluto

Here at LiBiPl.net we’re simple folks.  We don’t have a popular Facebook group or a snazzy campaign site.  We’re ordinary hard-working Earthlings, just like you,who know that our solar system has eight planets.  But some extremists are trying to trick you into giving Pluto a seat at the planetary table, and I just can’t sit by and say nothing.

First off,I’ve got nothing at all against Sackboy.  He’s a decent, family man,a citizen, who I just happen to have a disagreement with on this issue.  I’ve reached across the aisle,on many occasions,to grab a piece of sponge or jump across a pit of fire with Mr. Sackboy.  It saddens me that he’s been duped into supporting such an ill-considered proposition;when this is all over,I hope that we can create something together again.

“But Joe,”my opponent might say,“Pluto’s been a planet since 1930!”  Well, let’s take a look at that.  In 1930 we were desperately searching for Lowell’s “Planet X”;there was a built-in bias toward naming whatever we found a planet.  So we found this chunk of rock and ice in around the right place, and dubbed it “Planet Pluto”.  And what’s happened since then?  Pluto’s planetary regime saw a World War,a Cold War (coincidence?),and the rise of Disco music.  Do we really want 70 more years of the same disastrous policies?  Or will we support the brave group of scientists who stood up in 2006 and said “No more!”?

The truth is,it’s just too risky to consider Pluto a planet.  With such a highly eccentric orbit, are we certain that Pluto won’t prove itself too much of a maverick and attack the orbits of established planets?  To say nothing of it’s association with Charon.  Some would have you believe that Charon is Pluto’s moon, but they’re much closer to a binary system;can we really trust a planet that can be so influenced?  We still don’t know enough about Pluto’s past, but I’ve heard that it was originally a moon of Neptune that was kicked out by Triton;  Bravo Triton,I say!

I believe that our friend Sackboy has been caught up in a culture of fear.  If Pluto is not a planet, what about his own home?  LittleBigPlanet is little, like Pluto, right?  I say no.  Pluto is a slowly disintegrating assemblage of rock and ice, already pint-sized compared to Earth’s moon, and getting smaller every year.  The LittleBigPlanet, despite appearances,is massive and growing.  As the esteemed Mr. Fry has informed us,the entire contents of all human dreams is deposited there.  Last night I dreamt of a fleet of aircraft carriers shooting down the Death Star.  That’s billions of tonnes of material!  And I’m just one person.  But one person can make a difference, and all of us together will keep LittleBigPlanet from ever descending to the level of Pluto.

So please join us here at LiBiPl.net in saying “No”to Proposition Pluto.  Wrong on orbit, wrong on Disco, wrong for our solar system.

  • You know that I usually post good comments, but i have to say one thing.

    Who cares?!

The original post as well as this one is stupid.

    LBP ftw

I totally agree with you on this one. Why would they have Sackboy be part of a “Make Pluto a Planet”campaign? What’s next? Mario is going to start a “Make Marijuana Legal”campaign?

For a lot more than 80 years people thought the Earth was the center of the universe and we changed that didn’t we. I think we can accept Pluto of not being a planet.

Whoever started this is just using Sackboy’s popularity to achieve what they want. That is wrong.

Now let’s all go Play,Create, and Share!!

  • i signed the proposition and i join here to say “NO”against it….because both is fun :)

Totally unrelated comment –I finally got my copy of LittleBigPlanet today! Yay! :D

Also- I agree that Pluto should not be a planet.

  • I know this post is meant to be humorous, but there are valid scientific reasons for reinstating Pluto as a planet, and I applaud Sackboy and Little Big Planet for their efforts toward this goal.

The demotion of Pluto was done by only four percent of the IAU and immediately opposed in an official petition by an equal number of professional astronomers led by Dr. Alan Stern,Principal Investigator of NASA’s New Horizons mission to Pluto.

Pluto IS a planet because unlike most objects in the Kuiper Belt,it has attained hydrostatic equilibrium, meaning it has enough self-gravity to have pulled itself into a round shape. When an object is large enough for this to happen,it becomes differentiated with core, mantle, and crust, just like Earth and the larger planets, and develops the same geological processes as the larger planets, processes that inert asteroids and most KBOs do not have.

  • @Laurel:You make a good point. In the height of political fervor, perhaps I judged Pluto too harshly. Would you agree that Pluto-Charon might be considered a binary planet,or do you feel that Pluto’s hydrostatic equilibrium is sufficient to make it a stand-alone planet?

  • If Charon is in a state of hydrostatic equilibrium–which appears to be the case,as all our images show it to be round–and if the center of gravity between Pluto and Charon is in fact between the two bodies, then yes,Pluto-Charon should be considered a binary planet. One object’s (Pluto) being in hydrostatic equilibrium tells us only about that particular object. It cannot define what another object (Charon) is. That can be determined only by looking at the characteristics of Charon itself.
