A few Beta notes of note

First, some wise words from Sam Protagonist:

Anything you believe is unsuitable or inappropriate for the game should be reported immediately. By posting it here the only thing you’ll do is encourage more people to look for it and insodoing encourage more people to create levels that people will take offense at. Content such as this will be moderated when it’s reported,so make good use of the reporting tool.

Please stop using forums and comments to tell the world about offensive levels.  Just report them, and then deny the creator the attention they’re looking for.

Over on the EU PlayStation forums they’re taking a vote on whether to keep the already-created content when the Beta ends.  I have no preference myself, but a lot of people are quite bent out of shape about losing their work;I expect that we’ll be seeing the published levels retained.  To make it clear:

Please bear in mind that what we’re talking about here are levels that have been uploaded already, any save game data, offline creations or progress cannot be transferred into the full game.

So yes,we will have to go through the tutorials again, and you can’t keep any of those naughty levels that you’re afraid to publish. :)

MusterBuster also gives confirmation of the Beta end time:October 12th at 23:59 GMT.

Over here in the States,USA Today is giving away 15,000 Beta keys.  I personally don’t think this is a good idea.  If most Eurogamer and GameSpot readers don’t seem to be able to understand what a Beta is,what are the chances that USA Today‘s readership won’t be completely turned off by any flaws they encounter?

The article there has some nice quotes from familiar faces, but nothing too ground-breaking.

With the recent giveaways,it seems that just about all of the core fanbase is in the Beta now.  Are any of our US readers still out in the cold?  Due to entering most of the contests,we actually have a few extra,so just leave us a comment!

If you are giving away beta codes,I am definitely up for one! I have been trying for AGES to get one. I always seem to be just a bit too late.

As to giving out so many beta codes now…it makes a bit of sense. They are going to pack the servers with players all of about 4 days before the beta ends. It will be like giving people that first hit of a drug…and then taking it away for the next two weeks.

Come the 21st,I expect people will be ready to tear the stores down to get their copies after having been so long without their newly formed addiction that is LittleBitPlanet.

I’m still Beta-less,although I am in the UK so I doubt your keys would work for me :(

    Ah well,it’s only 16 days…:)

I don’t know your e-mail,so I decided to send you this through a comment. Check the Top 10 User-Created LittleBigPlanet levels according to Wired ;)

Yeah,I would definatly consider myself to be one of the core user base …not to mention general fanatic of games (Especialy LBP ever since GDC) and yet after all the contests and giveaways i’ve entered…. somehow I never got the chance to play the beta…and. Of course I’ve now probably seen this post a little late to grab one of your few left over…but when you love a game this much, you got to try anyway. so,what I’m trying to say is,I would like to kindly and respectfuly ask for a spare beta code. if you actualy have any left that is. By the way I’ve love this site (this is not butt kissing here),I’ve been one of the many lurkers reading everything i can and passing it on to my friends. Keep it up.

Oh,I forgot to mention 3 other things on my comment above since the unbearable excitement made me press ‘submit comment’too soon :P

    1. Concerning the list Wired provided us with,I sincerely do not agree with it. At least one of the best levels I’ve seen on the beta isn’t there. It’s called LittleBigPhantasy and it features some really neat creations (dragons!). You can watch it here:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbc2BQYIuCs&feature=iv&annotation_id=event_855426

    2. On the other hand the lbp official news site highlighted another two truly amazing levels. You can now add a calculator and a piano song player (‘To Zanarkand’from Final Fantasy X) to the already fantastic Tetris machine Mm created.

    3. Finally,I won’t say a word on this one, since the link says it all:

I sadly didn’t get in so if you give me a key that would be awesome

  • Martin

great info, especially the beta closing date,I didn’t realize they would end it so soon. It’s good to see that progress won’t transfer from beta to game, that would draw some complaints for sure =D

thanks for all your hard work on keeping this blog updated,I’ve been following it for a while now and it’s where I get all of my LBP news…

Btw,you wouldn’t have any beta keys left by any chance? I don’t have one and wouldn’t mind testing out the game in the few days that remain…;-)

I know I am probably too late as I have been in all of the other contests, but I would love it if you would send me a beta key. I have been looking forward to this game for so long. This past month has been brutal I have scanned all of the LBP sites for as much information on the game as I can get,and now everyone seems to be playing the beta. Thank you for your time and I hope you send me a key. Brian Pedersen

{Poke Poke} I commented…I need beta…dying here. Entered in the USA TODAY give-away…and still no mail from them, either. I do not think I am getting one from them,so{AHEM} “You are my last hope,Obi Wan!”

  • Richard Jones

I consider myself a core fan and still don’t have a beta. It’s what I get for living in Australia :)

    (but we have great beaches)

  • Whoa, thanks for all the response. At this point I’ve sent out the couple extra keys that I had. :)

  • Simon

I got a beta code from usatoday, but when i was going to redeem it,i was told it had already been used…

  • Ashitaka

Awesome! Sephiroth and Snake, what else could we ask for? :D

  • nishant

    i don’t have a code.
i’ve looked everywher, and actually got one,but it was already used and didn’t work.
    Can i please get one

  • Brian Pedersen

Thank you so much for giving me a beta key. That was the most fun i’ve had in a game in a long time. When you first go to make a level you are like. Wow,how am I going to do this? Then after a little while you get into it and realize it’s really easy to use. Now waiting for the 21st is a little easier, but I’m alot more excited. Thank you again for your generosity!

  • “I have no preference myself.”

Can I ask why you would have no preference? I mean, when you get right down to it,what reason is there to not want more content available with the launch of the game?

Don’t get me wrong,I understand it was a beta and that there might be some technical limitation that makes it difficult to transfer beta levels into actual final game build levels. But if all things are equal what could possibly posses you to say no preference?

  • @Matt L:“No preference”was probably a little strong;I apologize. It’s more that I can see both sides. On one side, people did put a lot of effort in,and some of the levels are really good, and (as you say) let’s have more content available at launch. On the other side,it was a Beta, and only some of the assets were available (leading to a lot of the levels being similar in look),and I would hate for Beta-compatibility concerns to get in the way of having the infrastructure solid and feature-rich at launch.
As it is,they put it up to a vote (knowing how the vote would go,I’m sure),so the technical concerns must’ve not been severe. I just hope the journalists doing their final reviews don’t base anything on some of the simple test levels that were part of the Beta.
